The aim of this proposal is to study the routing and spectrum assignment (RSA) problem in elastic optical core networks under the dynamic traffic conditions, and to develop novel methods for solving it. A new graph model will be developed to model the exact dynamic behaviour of the elastic optical network in terms of spectrum usage; then by using this new model, new effective heuristic algorithms will be designed for solving the general routing and spectrum assignment problem which was proven to be NP-hard. Furthermore, the questions of how and how much performance improvement can be gained, if any, will be evaluated in case of handling the spectrum assignment and traffic grooming problems concurrently. To this end, the traffic grooming problem will be represented on the new graph model, and heuristic algorithms will be designed to solve RSA together with traffic grooming.
