Providing students with a broad professional education in Computer Engineering and Information Sciences so that they have the knowledge to influence the direction of the field and industrial practice in the current information age, and the skills to continually enhance this knowledge with an inquisitive minded approach and a sense of ethics.
Furthermore, taking an active part in universal projects in all areas of computer engineering and becoming a strong R&D partner in all academic activities.
In order to accomplish this mission the department identified the following list of educational objectives for the undergraduate program:
- Produce successful practitioners of computer engineers who can apply computer engineering principles to address the technological challenges of the future in their careers.
- Produce graduates who can apply modern computer engineering techniques to create technologies to meet the needs of society in their careers.
- Produce graduates who can recognize the importance of the interaction between technological and societal decisions in their careers.
The mission of the Department of Computer Engineering is consistent with the mission of Istanbul Technical University: As a higher education and research institution dedicated to the advancement of basic and applied sciences, our mission is to educate the technological leaders and entrepreneurs of the future in a rich intellectual environment sensitive to both local and global issues.
All students of Computer Engineering at ITU must by the time of their graduation demonstrate that they have:
- an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering to the field of computer engineering
- an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
- an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability
- an ability to observe and examine an existing structure or system in a criticizing attitude and finally correct or enhance it
- an ability to function on multi-disciplinary teams
- an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
- an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
- an ability to communicate effectively
- the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental and societal context
- a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
- a knowledge of contemporary issues
- an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice
- an ability to adapt to changing conditions
